Travel, Transculturality, and Identity in England, c. 1550 - 1700

The ERC funded Travel, Transculturality, and Identity in England, c. 1550 - 1700 (TIDE) project was a 5-year European Research Council funded project (2016-2021) that aimed to investigate how mobility in the great age of travel and discovery shaped English perceptions of human identity based on cultural identification and difference. This project received funding from the European Research Council (ERC) under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 681884.

From Silk Roads to Tudor Ships: Poetry and Porcelain Dream-Worlds at the World Museum, Liverpool

A collaboration between the World Museum in Liverpool and the TIDE project which brought curators, academic researchers, poets, filmmakers, and students together and culminated in the permanent redisplay of the World Museum’s pre-modern Chinese ceramics in the World Cultures gallery, providing an immersive museum experience that threads the ceramics’ places of origin and migrations to their presence in the gallery.

From Middle Temple to Manoa: Global Networks at the Early Modern Inns of Court

This exhibition was curated by TIDE researchers Lauren Working and Emily Stevenson, and ran at the Middle Temple Library from September 2021 to January 2022.

Oxford's Global Networks

This exhibition, which ran at the Bodleian in 2023, showcased some of Oxford’s connections to global travel in an age of trade and colonial expansion alongside a series of miniature porcelain globes and small domestic vessels designed to set up a dialogue between the present and the past, exploring how maps influence our sense of place, belonging and identity.

The Beacon Teacher Fellowship Programme

A collaboration between TIDE and the Runnymede Trust, was a 12-week programme of training and professional development which provided fellows with unique instruction in the best practice of teaching British migration and empire in secondary schools. It culminated in a policy paper launched at the House of Commons in July 2019, and led to the development of TRACTION.

The Poetry Society

The Poetry Society collaborated with Oxford University to create film poems which premiered at TIDEfest 2021. The films, directed by Helmie Stil (founder of poetrycinema) and Aindri C, feature poems by Sarah Howe and Fred D’Aguiar which draw on the research of the TIDE project.
