Currently, as part of an ERC project 'Geographies and Histories of the Ottoman Supernatural Tradition', Prof. Aslı Niyazioğlu is exploring how early modern Ottomans viewed Istanbul's ancient statues, columns, and obelisks as talismans. For many Ottoman writers, Istanbul's antiquities were not insignificant remains of a distant past, but had significant messages and uses. This project aims to understand why.
